Wow! What a moment, Beaches Vineyard! There in the middle of Sunday’s worship, Ricky and Katie, leading our community in a killer cover of Aaron Strumpel’s song, “Mightier”, and what happens? – The power goes out.
Lights. AC’s. Instruments. Power-points. Everything. Off.
But we wouldn’t have known it.
We kept on singing.
We kept on worshiping, without skipping a beat.
Only this time our worship was deeper and more connected. It was simple and authentic. In that moment, we all had a place in the worship service, or should I say, we all saw our place in that the worship service.
That moment wasn’t about the talented worship team, the tempo, or the song. Hell, it wasn’t even about the darkness. That moment, or at least it seemed to me, was about releasing ourselves: to sing, to join together, to press through, to put voice to the stirring in our hearts, to give God all we had.
I think the sacredness of the moment rested in the fact that we were all vulnerable
and present, to each other and to God.
And the Lord met us there in that place. In our vulnerability and authenticity. And it was sweet, and it was peaceful, and it was holy.
May we reflect on that moment and allow it to speak and shape us as followers of Christ, as a community of faith.
May we appreciate the spontaneity of that moment for what it was, while at the same time prayerfully looking forward to future breakthroughs of God’s presence in our gatherings (big and small), whether the power be on or off, whether through a full band or just our voices.
