According to the philosopher, Charles Taylor, over the course of Western history there has been a significant shift in society that has gone from a “God-centered cosmos in the premodern era to one focused on the human self in isolation, centered on it own ends” (Taylor, A Secular Age). The fruit of such a shift, according to Taylor, is that now both people and God, are viewed to exist primarily to serve our desires or interests; i.e., What can they do for me?
If this is indeed the lens by which our society interprets reality, then what does it mean to be the church in today’s cultural climate? How do we, those who profess a life devoted to Jesus and his bride, the church, live as faithful witnesses of the gospel, together?
