Our English word for humility shares a Latin root with the word humus. Humus is the 4-12 inches of rich soil that covers the forest floor. It gathers slowly, over centuries. It is made up of the decomposition of plants and animals. It’s exact makeup and benefits are still being analyzed and understood by biologists — it’s better understood as a process than as a substance — but it is has been observed that all plant life struggles or fails to grow without humus.
It seems the same is true of humility in the life of the spirit. Nothing hinders spiritual growth quite like the absence of humility. But humility can be a challenging thing to name and understand and grow towards.
Join us this Sunday as we explore the interplay between humility, prayer and our transformation.
