On the cross at Calvary, Jesus officiated the most unexpected wedding in history: the marriage of suffering to glory. And he promised us that if we would follow him in spending our lives on others, in refusing to ignore the pain within ourselves and all around us, in submitting ourselves the process of death, we would share in his resurrection life: the life that is truly life. But we don’t like death. We don’t like discomfort. Here in the west, we’ve even convinced ourselves that we can resist aging. But none of that changes reality: there is no resurrection without death. Yet this is a message of hope. Because you are not alone in your pain. And death is not the end of your story. If you feel like you are dying there is also the potential that you are being reborn.
