The gifts of the Spirit is a topic that has been discussed and debated by followers of Jesus for numbers of years. The extremes of this debate could be found in two camps.
First, there are some that believe the gifts are strictly natural talents (ex: serving + generosity) that the Holy Spirit empowers, and the supernatural aspects of them where momentary experiences that were for the disciples of the early church.
Then there are others that believe the gifts are supernatural abilities (ex: healing + prophecy) imparted by the Spirit that should never be restrained and should be the sole focus of a disciple.
And depending on where you fall in this argument, you might find yourself digging your heels in one camp while diminishing or devaluing the other.
So the questions hanging over all of it are these: Is this what the gifts of the Spirit are meant to do, to divide followers of Jesus? And if not, then how can we understand what the gifts of the Spirit are and what they were meant to do, so that we can begin to see them for what they truly are...gifts to the church?
Join us this Sunday as we examine the gifts of the Spirit and the questions surrounding them in the continuation of our series, The Third Person.
