The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.
These two parables tell basically the same story, but through the lives of two (I think) very different people. One is a Bumbler and the other a Searcher.
One guy, for all we can tell, is quite literally just making his way through a field when he stumbles upon a great treasure.
The other is a merchant who has organized his entire life around finding something of tremendous value.
You may have been each of these people at different times in your life. Right now, today: Who do you identify more with?
Have you found that you have bumbled your way into more grace and beauty and truth than you ever deserved to find?
Or have you diligently searched for meaning and purpose in this life?
In either case,
once the treasure has been found,
it is a lot of work and sacrifice to truly possess it.
Hope to see you this Sunday as we examine together the invitations and the challenges that Jesus poses to us in these parables. Peace!
