I am not sure, but if you are like me, when the subject of giving comes up, the first word that enters my mind is “Tithe” because of all the sermons I have heard through the years. Many of my friends and acquaintances even consider the subject as a sore spot because it implies a requirement, similar to the “10 Commandments” that we are required to follow as believers. The reality is that if we focus on tithing, we have missed the whole point of giving and how God has set up His Kingdom to function. Giving is part of God’s mentality and the way He designed His Kingdom. Our biggest challenge is living in a society where the focus is not on giving but on accumulation. Accumulation has become an addiction, just like drugs, alcohol, sex, etc. True spiritual maturity cannot occur until we embrace the mentality of giving, the way we embrace the love given us by our Father when He gave us His Son as the ultimate gift.
Join me Sunday when we consider how God illustrated the right patterns of giving before the law, during the time of the Mosaic law and in New Testament times. I think you will find that while tithing is important, it alone misses the whole point of a giving mentality and God’s heart. The consistency of thought will be evident as we walk through these different periods of Biblical times.
