“All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.”
- 2 Corinthians 5:18-19
We are free from the penalty of sin because of the death and resurrection of Jesus, and it is the law of the Spirit that provides freedom. In freedom, without condemnation, the Holy Spirit convicts us and reminds us of the cross, and restores our hope. It is through Jesus Christ that that Spirit who gives life sets us free, and as a result we live according to the Spirit, no longer under the old covenant, but walking in the freedom of the new covenant. In one of Paul’s later letters to the Corinthian church, one of his main themes is reconciliation. Living in the freedom given to us by the Holy Spirit is what allows us set aside fault, and actively seek reconciliation. We participate in God’s mission in the world, which is the mission of reconciliation.
How can you participate in a ministry of reconciliation in your own life? In your home? In your neighborhood? And in your City?
Ask God to empower you with the freedom of the Holy Spirit to move toward those you need to reconcile with today. In doing so, we participate in restoring creation. For, even though he had no sin, Jesus was made sin for us so that we might be made the righteousness of God. As a result of the substitution of Jesus, satisfying the old covenant on our behalf, we are reconciled, justified, given freedom and eternal life under the new covenant, as participants in the ministry of reconciliation.
